i keep hearing about how terrible the whole katrina storm thing is and immediately one thing popps into my head. what the fuck do they expect. scientific america warned them they were at risk. but whatever. the next part i want to know is why more people hadnt gotten survival gear. rule number one, have some stored food and water. rule number two... get a fucking gun so you can keep your food when the rest of the assholes who didnt prepare come to take your food and water.
we live where earthquakes happen. we are just as at risk for a life altering disaster as the people in the south were. if it isnt a meltdown at diablo canyon, or a earthquake, then im sure somthing else will come along.
survival kits are easy to maintain and build. first off, get a brand new unsoiled trashcan with a good lid. keep your can of supplies where you can get to it easily. next buy bottles of water. figure a gallon a day for each person for at least a week. stock more if you can cause you never know how long itll take to restore normality. next, find your comfort food. what food do you always want to snack on when your stressed. get some and put it in the kit because you are gonna be a bit under the weather when sifting thru earthquake rubble for your supplies. next get your bulk food. make sure it needs no cooking and minimum prep to eat. i am a fan of the cambles foods cans of soup. the expensive ones with the pull tab tops. these taste good without cooking, believe me. they rock. good foods for storage include ensure brand shakes, as they are a complete meal in a can and are used by people who need liquid diets. chocolate ensure plus is the best tasting. peaunut butter has a shelf life of 10 years and does not need to be refrigerated. packages of planters honey roasted penuts are good. just avoid the junkfood crap cause your gonna need real food under stressful times. get some powdered beverage mix cause water only gets old fast. its easiest to rotate supplies if you stock items your gonna use anyway. buy new stuff before you take the old stuff out or you might forget to replace it.
next, get a old pillow case and fill it with a clean change of clothes, socks toothbrush, ect. make sure you throw a light jacket into the bag as not having shelter can suck and it might get cold. put in anything your gonna need in a bad situation. flashlight, batteries, extra bulb for the light. any medication you will need. if you have some painkillers laying around toss em in, if you have a broken arm and no doctor, your gonna want the tylenol 3 left over from your last doctor visit.
and for fucks sake, get a gun. a gun is the most seldom used survival item, but if it comes down to that, its the most important. want to keep roiters out of your house? use a gun. why do people call the police? its not that criminals respect the police, its cause the police have guns. any gun will do, and what is best is open to oppinion. some of my favorites include mossberg 500 pump 12 gauge, berreta 92 9mm pistol, sks, m1 carbine, 1911 45acp pistol. want somthing cheaper and lighter? try a ruger 10/22 rifle. a great basic rifle. chambered in 22lr its good enough to defend with but wont go too far down the street after going thru a few walls. your neighbors can rest easy cause your bullets wont make it thru your walls and into their houses. i cannot stress enough that having any gun at all when you need it is a godsend. the fastest police responce in the world doesnt compare to how long it takes someone to kick a door or two in and come get what he wants out of your house. if you dont have a gun, then pray hes comming in looking for your tv set, and not a piece of you.
we all watched the tv when the tsunami hit thailand and thought, shit that sucks. good thing it cant happen here. what are you thinking now when you watch the tv and see major american cities under water? true, being prepared probably wouldnt have helped many of those people. but wouldnt you feel better if you were one of the flood survivors sitting on your roof, waiting for the water level to go down so you could swim inside and get your backpack of food and your shotgun out of your kitchen closet?
sorry if this is a bit of a rant. it always pisses me off when i hear about people dying or getting raped cause they didnt have basic survival gear. you can get out of some pretty nasty places if all you have is a gun, a backpack full of water and a snickers bar or two. why not stock a few things just in case.
any of my friends who have never shot a gun before and would like to can contact me and i can show you what you need to know. i believe its our duty as members of society to know many basic things. basic home defense with a firearm is one of them. dont even get me started about how many people cant change a tire or check their own oil.

Well, I think that we're forgeting exactly WHO the people are who we are seeing on the TV ... the ones who didn't leave. They're the poorest of the poor. You're seeing people who don't work for a living, and probably don't even know HOW. Planning for tomorrow. Hell, planning a meal, is more than they're really able to do. And it's not because they're stupid or whatever. It's just because they live and grew up in a world where they never learned tools to survive, even in the best of circumstances. So stockpiling food, water, gear, is foreign to them. Even if the money were available, it wouldn't even have occured to them. Extra money? Probably go to cable TV. But there's not likely any extra money.
And as for the gun thing, seems to me enough of them DID have guns. Enough people to take a hospital hostage, to shoot at helicopters bringing help. To shoot at each other. There was enough shooting going on. People weren't thinking clearly, people were in distress, and people were doing horrible things to one another. I'm sure that guns in the hands of "good guys" is what you're thinking ... but the line between good guys and bad guys isn't drawn here. All these people trying to survive, brutally trying to get what they think they deserve by taking it by force from others. Not so cool.
I'm not anti-gun. Not by any means. But I can't say that all these poor people in the Katrina-stricken areas really need to be told they should have a gun. There were enough guns being put to terrible use this past week.

far as being down and out and not being prepared, if i was homeless, or even just really really poor id still have a few cans of food and water in a backpack. living on the street if anything will make you better aware that its good to have a few days worth of food in your pack. food to be used when your really hungry and cant get anything else.

We could ask why a NUMBER of groups haven't been asked for help. Militia groups are the least of 'em.

I have too much damn water in my trunk. =) And too many people overlook the importance of a weapon: namely, a gun. It's an essential, IMO. You rock.
